Welcome to UCP Seguin

UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago is a charitable not-for-profit agency serving individuals with disabilities in metropolitan Chicago and beyond.

Recently, SB955 – the bill that provides a solution to our staffing crisis by raising starting wages for DSPs to $15 per hour – cleared another hurdle. The bill passed out of the House Human Services Appropriations committee and needs to get to the floor of the House for a final vote.

However, there is no guarantee that the bill will be called for a vote. Just a few days remain before the House’s May 31 deadline to pass SB955. We must make our voice heard now with our State Representatives!

As you know, passage of this bill impacts so many people with disabilities, their families and DSPs themselves.

Visit the They Deserve More website to email your State Representative. You can look up your Representative’s phone number herePlease reach out and tell them that SB955 deserves a YES vote! Even with the holiday weekend, legislators and their staff are still reviewing these messages—especially this close to the end of the session.

As before, it is essential that State Reps hear from those in your networks as well – families, caregivers, donors, friends, fellow agencies. Please reach out to them and urge them to contact their State Reps with the same message.

In the Chicago Tribune, columnist Rex Huppke tells the story of DSP Essie Martin and “her four guys" she cares for in a group home in Lombard. In Huppke’s words: “The work Essie does is vitally important. It's decent and compassionate and hard and something few would be able to handle."

Agencies around Illinois who care for those with disabilities are struggling—cobbling together hours and overtime staffing plans to try to support those in their care, and leaving thousands on the waiting list without hope...or discharging individuals for whom they can no longer provide care.

We all know the incredible work that DSPs perform every day for Illinois’ most vulnerable citizens. We know how much our agencies and families depend on them. THEY DESERVE MORE.

UCP Seguin has nearly 160 vacancies among 800 positions. Bottom line: we need more dedicated individuals who believe in our mission of creating life without limits for people with disabilities. And we need an infusion of additional dollars to support these staff in performing their mission-driven duties. Comcast Newsmakers featured UCP Seguin on a recent segment to discuss this issue.

Watch Jim Haptonstahl and Ellee Pai Hong discuss these challenges here.

UCP Seguin's Mary Green was featured on WCIU's "I Love My Job" segment.  Mary has provided exceptional care to adults with disabilities at UCP Seguin for the past 6 years.  Mary loves her job and you can too!  Learn how you can grow your career at UCP Seguin here.
