Adult Services

UCP Seguin's Community Connections and CHOICE initiatives represent an emerging philosophy in service delivery to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities focused on the following:

  • Downsizing from large congregate day services settings
  • Person-centered vs. program-based services
  • Flexible targeting of services towards community-integrated employment, volunteerism, socialization, personal enrichment, artistic expression, wellness and other productive, meaningful life experiences and activities

UCP Seguin currently operates its Community Connections efforts serving over 100 individuals through five bases of operation in Cicero, Oak Park, Chicago, Tinley Park and Berkeley. The Oak Park site is the home of CHOICE, which concentrates on person-centered supports and individual self-determination. Through the Levinson Center, nearly 20 CHOICE participants are currently engaged in a wide variety of productive, meaningful community-integrated activities. Individuals are offered services and supports that include, but are not limited to:

  • Employment, including job placement at community-based worksites
  • Vocational training and volunteer opportunities in community venues
  • Social and recreation supports utilizing community-inclusive venues
  • Activities to build life skills, from making personal purchases and doing laundry to creating works of art and preparing meals, within an array of community environments
  • Access to assistive technology to facilitate greater involvement across an array of experiences and activities
  • Opportunities to work as part of UCP Seguin’s social enterprises (Seguin Gardens & Gifts and Seguin Auto Center), through direct sales of products (such as plants and gifts produced by people with disabilities), delivery of services (such as groundskeeping), and marketing of these products and services

In short, the CHOICE and Community Connections initiatives provide for a more innovative, community-integrated, person-centered service and support model increasingly desired by people with developmental disabilities and their families.
